Expert Instruction, Proven Results
Fort Greene BJJ is a martial arts academy at 412 Myrtle Avenue in Fort Greene, Brooklyn — the newest location built by the same team behind Renzo Gracie Bayside and Bronx Martial Arts Academy. We teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai kickboxing — practical self-defense skills that build real fitness, mental toughness, and quiet confidence. Jiu-jitsu has been taught at this address since 2009, and we're proud to keep the art alive here with new ownership, new energy, and the same commitment to the craft. Beyond group classes, we also offer one-on-one private lessons for students who want focused, accelerated training built around their own goals and pace.

Fort Greene BJJ is run by the same team behind Renzo Gracie Bayside and Bronx Martial Arts Academy — hundreds of families trained, three NYC locations, and the same standards at every one of them. Our instructors teach a cooperative, technique-driven curriculum where beginners train alongside experienced practitioners in every class. Nobody is thrown into something they're not ready for, and everyone — kids and adults alike — earns their own advancement at their own pace.

Got Questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
I've never done any martial arts. Can I still come?
+
Absolutely. Most of our students started with zero experience. Every class is designed so beginners learn alongside more experienced practitioners. You'll never be thrown into something you're not ready for.
Do I need to be in shape to start?
+
No. Jiu-jitsu will get you in shape — that's part of the practice. Come as you are. Your conditioning will build naturally as you train.
Is this safe? Will I get hurt?
+
Safety is foundational to how we train. Partners are taught to work with each other, not against each other. Technique is prioritized over intensity. You control your own pace, and instructors supervise every roll. Injuries can happen in any physical activity, but our training culture minimizes risk deliberately.
What should I wear to my first class?
+
A loaner gi is included with your intro package — no need to buy one before you start. For No Gi classes, wear athletic shorts (no zippers or pockets) and a fitted t-shirt or rash guard. Bare feet on the mat. Show up 10 minutes early and we'll walk you through everything.
Can my family and I all train here?
+
Yes. Adults and children train at the same academy but in separate, age-appropriate classes — kids and adults are always separated on the mat. Teenagers may be eligible for both kids and adult classes depending on age and experience. Check the schedule for class times.
What's the difference between Gi and No Gi?
+
Gi classes use the traditional uniform (the gi/kimono), which adds grip-based techniques. No Gi uses athletic clothing and tends to be faster-paced. We recommend trying both — they complement each other and develop different aspects of your game.
Do you offer private lessons?
+
Yes — private one-on-one lessons are available now and can be scheduled around your availability. We're also launching technique labs soon — semi-private sessions (4 people max) focused on a specific technique, run in four-session blocks.
